1. The New York City Subway System (New York City)

It took many years for the subway system to reach its current level of reliability, yet it is evident that it is still the best way to get around the city. In this article we will take a look at each of the subways in order to tell you why they are such great ways to travel in New York NYC, and to reveal the many features that make them unique. While the system is not perfect, it is a great starting point to study the system to see how it has progressed over time.

In this article we will study the New York City Subway system, using both the existing and the replacement subway lines that began this past year (January) 2018, as well as the addition of the LIRR and Long Island Rail Road rail lines. Although there will be differences between the stations we look at for this article, both the BMT and the subways are similar in design and function.

1.1 Introduction

The New York City subway system covers one of the greatest cities in the world, and in terms of length and complexity are its own beast, though these two terms are frequently used interchangeably. When it comes to the New York City MTA, most fans are aware of two main stations that connect the different districts of New York: Madison Square Park, and Brooklyn Bridge Park. There is also the Midtown, and the Flatiron. Outside the stations the system can be divided into four major sections connected by a ring of subways for each section:

East Side: Midtown East (including Park Slope)

Midtown East (including Park Slope) West Side

West Side Northern Side

The most popular way of traveling between the outer and inner districts is through the LIRR, subway line No. 4. As shown in the map below, the subway is the primary line of transportation from Madison Square Park to Midtown and from Midtown to Brooklyn Bridge Park. The LIRR Line No. 4 also offers a very convenient alternative for commuting between Midtown and Brooklyn on the elevated Grand Concourse.

The current MTA system, however, includes several important improvements aimed towards increasing service to more people, and particularly people living in areas that are particularly hard to move. One of the major enhancements over the past decade is the construction of all four New York subway lines, the Long Island Rail
